Following the fight with the Bugbears and the Ogre, the party explored the tunnels to the north west and found a stone door. At this point, Byron disappeared to check for treasure. No keyhole was apparent and Beef opened the door after checking for traps. It all seemed safe and the door swung open silently only to reveal the sight of a beautiful Drow - she looked familiar.. Like Vyerith the Doppelganger, or was it the other way around? She wasn't alone. Also in the room were several robed and masked figures, the same ones from Thundertree, Dragon Cultists. (Cult of the Dragon)
The Drow offered a truce, saying that no one had to die and that they could have the mine, if only she and her companions could have access to the Forge of Spells (whatever that is). The party asked for a moment of deliberation and the Drow conceded.
A hushed and hasty meeting ensued. The conclusion was basically to "fuck 'em up". Swords hissed from scabards and a ferocious battle ensued. Fireballs, Counterspells, Firebolts and Hellish Rebukes were cast. Farraine at the forefront steadfastly held the line, cutting a swathe through multiple enemies - giant spiders and cultists all dismembered with relative ease. Finn, Beef and Lucian picking off the others with a combination of magic, sharpshooting and brute force.
Suddenly, Byron appeared from a side entrance delivering a flurry of stunning strikes until only the Drow was left.. weakened and outnumbered. Beef wasted no time in launching a devastating Eldritch Blast before she could cast again. The magical blast caught her square in the torso, killing her outright and launching her lifeless frame against the wall with a sickening crunch. Lucian's eyes rested on the iridescent Spider staff that fell from her hands, clattering to the floor. The only sounds, the last gasps of the dying cultists and ragged breathing of the heroes.
No sooner had the Drow's smouldering corpse hit the ground, Byron was already searching the bodies. The sharp-eyed Halfling anticipated this, intercepting and redistributing some of the loot into group treasure.
The group searched the room, discovering a good amount of gold, an amulet shaped like a beer mug, a pocket-sized crystal coffin amongst other valuable sundries.
The statue in the room was of a noble Dwarf Lord with Emerald eyes. Emeralds that turned out to be fake and trapped upon closer inspection.
The party also discovered a key on the Drow's body. It opened the door to an adjacent room in which they found Nundro Rockseeker, one of Gundren's brothers. After a brief discussion Nundro left, making his way out of the mine and back to Phandalin, pausing only to bury the remians of the unfortunate Tharden Rockseeker who was slain by the Drow at the entrance to the caves.
After regrouping and healing, the heroes pressed on through the tunnels, using Binky's eyes to scout ahead. They passed through a booming cavern (Wave Echo Cave) where the sound of an underground geyser creates the sound of crashing waves, sending echos throughout the complex and presumably from which it derives its name. This leads into a cavern with a large smelter that appears to be the heart of the mine and then opens up into a large dining cavern containing the remains of shattered tables… and a host of Undead creatures that swarm from the shadows, howling for blood.
