Chapter 23 - You...Shall Not...Pass......Easily

Location Serpent Hills

Before heading straight into mortal peril once more our group of heroic mercenaries decides to retrieve the stolen tomes from Diderius's Library. Heeding the words of the Serpent creatures Beef and Finn remain at the top of the stairs and instead send the irreplaceable replaceable Tressym Binky, to head into the room and act as the eyes for Finn's Mage Hand. The invisible hand makes it's way over to the bookcase and one by one returns to Finn with the books. Whilst in the room Binky also spies a chest, ripe for looting, and the Mage Hand opens it gingerly (Binky retreating as far from the chest as possible...just in case). Fortunately, no trap is triggered and the contents of the chest are summarily lifted and transported to an awaiting halfling. Within the room there was also a couple of silver goblets and a silver jug, which, despite Finn's protestations, Beef insists to be taken also. Finn decides not to handle the Jug as it floats back to him, so instead presents it directly to Beef who gives it a bit of a swirl and pours out a small amount of its contents. The mysterious gaseous liquid falls from the spout and hisses as it strikes the floor. "Best put it back I think" he says.

With the Library Books and loot gathered, Binky walks out of the room, passed Beef and Finn, and with a sense of bored inevitability, strolls into the room with the waiting Serpent like creatures and his latest doom. But to everyone's surprise they do nothing, it seems that the party have either stumbled on some genius loophole in their contract or they're just not that good at being guards. Either way the Party walk back to the Library and return the stolen manuscripts to the shelves and notice a content ghost fade into the ether. Whilst in the relative safety of the ancient bookcases and dust the group decide to take a small rest before facing danger once more.

Refreshed they make their way to the room with a tomb, pausing briefly to make sure you got that nice little rhyme, and walk through the doorway into a darkened corridor. A small stairway lies ahead followed by a bridge, on the other side, mostly hidden in darkness, stand 4 Snake-like creatures. Finn disappears into the shadows, melting into the darkness, Sigrid pulls her hood up and shimmers into almost total invisibility, Finn looks on, thinking "I've got to get me one of those".

Lucian takes the lead and immediate sends a flaming fireball into the middle of the group of creatures scorching them severely. Beef edges onto the bridge to close the distance and immediately loses his footing, as he topples over the edge he manages to grab hold of some overhanging vines and dangles precariously above the dark void below. Sigrid moves forward looking poised to unleash a ferocious attack, but before stepping on the bridge, simply, and rather anti-climatically hides once more. Finn remains in the shadows but has a look about him that suggests that once more he has a cunning plan up his sleeve as he aims his crossbow into the darkness beyond. One of the creatures utters words of power and suggests that Beef let go of his lifevine  (see what I did there) but it appears that Beef's will is stronger than his understanding of the rules. Another beast tries the same trick but once again Beef remains firm in his grip. Struggling with all of his might, Beef finally manages to clamber back onto the bridge and casts a shattering spell at the monsters beyond.

One of the creatures on the other side of the bridge steps out from the shadows and a smile spreads across Finn's face, little does the monster know but Finn has been using Binky's darkvision and he now knows where his quarry lies, firing a deadly bolt at the surprised creature who recoils in pain and shock. Sigrid, seeing the wounded creature unleashes a frosty spell of her own, killing it instantly. Finn edges out of the shadows and fires another crossbow at one of the three remaining creatures, piercing it's eye socket and it falls to the ground. Farraine moves onto the bridge and cautiously moves up to Beef and bids him a friendly "Hello", In turn Beef edges to the far side of the bridge and casts a spell at one of the two remaining beasts, both of which actually hits for a change. In response the beast suggests that Beef cast his weapon into the abyss below but once more his will remains strong.

Lucian enters the fray, a sense of determination etched on his visage and cast a bolt of ice at an enemy, sending a chill down its very spine but it remains upstanding. Like a stuck record one of the Snake creatures tries to suggest to Beef that his sword would be more at home at the bottom of the chasm but again Beef remains steadfast and the pointed rapier remains tightly clenched in his fist. Finn once again moves out of the shadows and aims his crossbow once more, his aim is true and the bolt shoots from the shadows, across the bridge and pierces the skull of the Snake Creature sending it tumbling into the void below. Farraine sees that the young halfling is starting to amass a large tally, draws his two throwing axes and hurls them at the last remaining monster, hitting it squarely in the chest. It reels in pain but turns to face Farraine and decides that a new target has presented itself and suggests that Farraine cast his sword over the side of the bridge into the pit below. It seems that this change of tactic is a wise one as Farraine suddenly turns around, walks back towards the bridge and nonchalantly throws his sword over into the darkened pit.

Lucian walks forward onto the bridge and immediately goes base over apex and topples over the edge, luckily managing to grasp hold of the vines to prolong his new fight with gravity itself. Seeing the sword plummet into the pit, Sigrid morphs into the form of a giant eagle and swoops down under the bridge to locate the abandoned blade. Finn nimbly walks onto the bridge, showing his fellow party members how sure-footed he is and how a slippery bridge should be traversed. Farraine, maddened by the sudden realisation that he is no longer in possession of his favourite sword, draws his final two throwing axes and hurls them toward the now fleeing beast. He hits his target which staggers slightly before Beef casts Eldritch Blast one final time missing his first shot to the surprise of absolutely no one, but the second hits and takes the creature's head clean off its shoulders.

Once again our heroes are victorious and foes are defeated. Sigrid the eagle returns from the pit and drops Farraine's sword in his hands, Lucian scrambles up the vines and gets to his feet once more and joins the rest of the group on the other side of the bridge. Danger dispelled for now the party switch into scout mode and Sigrid and Binky take the lead, heading up the corridors ahead in search of traps or more apparent dangers. One of the corridors leads to a sunken room, the floor of which writhes ominously with a truly ridiculous number of snakes. Deciding to give that room a wide berth the party cautiously move forward and find a trail of foot prints leading from the snake pit. As they pass the pit with a carpet of snakes Sigrid communicates with them and gets strange sense of danger, yet the snakes themselves are not the ones to feel scared. It appears that trouble may be just around the corner for out band of warriors.

After a small unnecessary detour the party resume the foot print trail and Binky once more leads the way, when he gets towards the end of the narrow corridor he notices a snake-like statue in the room ahead and Finn tells the group of this latest finding. Before anything more can be said Beef takes the lead and foolishly strolls around the corner. A voice from another plain utters, "roll for initiative"
