Upon deciding that the Half-Orc won't bother them again, the party goes over the plan again with Noska Ur'Gray. They'll infiltrate as new recruits, whereby they'll have to prove their worth by doing a couple of jobs for Ahmaergo, Xanathar's second in command and ingratiate themselves with the other Lieutenants, some of whom could be turned against the Beholder. It's fear of Ahmaergo that keeps them in check. It is learned from Renaer that the Harpers have an informant inside the Xanathar Guild, Thorvin Twinbeard and that they should speak to him when they get the opportunity. He asks that they don't blow Thorvin's cover.
The group prepares for the mission and stocks up on supplies before Noska leads them to the secret entrance to Xanathar's lair in Castle Ward. They descend a narrow, spiraling staircase the walls of are carved with opened eyes that glow with a faint, magical light. The sense of being watch is apparent to all as they are led into a hall where they are asked to wait. After a short time, Noska returns with Ahmaergo a Dwarf clad in plate battle dress and a wicked-looking greataxe strapped to his back.
They are told that Xanathar has a mission for them, one that will take them into the first level of Undermountain, the famed dungeons that stretch from the mountain and below much of Waterdeep itself. The Beholder wants his territory reclaimed from bandits who have taken up residence in his domain and that they need to be reminded who's in charge. Ahmaergo turns and leaves. Shortly thereafter another of Xanathar's lieutenants arrives. A weaselly-looking Drow Elf wizard. The Drow unfolds a scroll and conjures a circle of teleportation. Noska finishes his brief and they step into the circle and feel a sudden sickening lurch before they find themselves in a square chamber with an exit to the south west.
